What is a Reformer?

The Reformer is a piece of equipment used in Pilates exercise. The Reformer glides forward and backward on rollers using spring-loaded resistance for a wide variety of exercises and positions. The spring resistance ensures muscles are worked properly throughout the range of motion. The resistance can be customized to suit everyone from rehab patients to athletes.

What are the benefits of Pilates?

Pilates is more than a workout. It is a continuum of mindful movements that strengthen from the inside out and head to toe. Pilates focuses around six main principals: Centering, Control, Concentration, Precision, Breath and Flow. Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, he originally called it Contrology. Eventually, he invented equipment that incorporated spring-loaded resistance to his exercise regimen. These movements and machines are constantly evolving and improving while keeping true to the core elements and philosophies that make Pilates so powerful.

Practiced on a regular basis, Pilates has the power to transform, improve and aid in the following:

  • Spinal decompression
  • Core strength
  • Posture and alignment
  • Muscle tone
  • Flexibility
  • Breath and endurance
  • Bone and heart health
  • Mental clarity
  • Body awareness
  • Balance
  • Gait
  • Extracurricular activities

Why the Reformer?

The Reformer facilitates hundreds of exercise variations, is no-impact (easy on the joints), allows for modifications for those with injuries, allows three-dimensional (functional movement) and is excellent for strength, muscle endurance and flexibility.

Will I get the same results from mat work?

Mat-based workouts are convenient and can be done anywhere. The reformer will place more emphasis on stabilizing core as you work your limbs, while adding variety and intensity.

What if I already strength train regularly?

Reformer exercise is a great compliment to your weight training program. The Reformer workout places an emphasis on core stabilization and smaller 'finesse' muscles that often are under-used or lazy, enhancing better overall muscle balance and performance.

How often should I do reformer training for optimal results?

Frequency varies based on the rest of your exercise routine. As a compliment to strength training for example, once a week; as a sole method of resistance training, twice a week or three times a week may be appropriate. Together with your trainer you can determine what makes the most sense with your goals.

Is it safe?

The STOTT PILATES method of training used by our trainers is the world's most respected Pilates brand of programming. Physical therapists, sports medicine and fitness professionals all have collaborated to refine these methods. It is a contemporary anatomically-based approach with a combination of key medical research and modern day knowledge of biomechanics. If you have any doubt about its appropriateness for you, please contact your physician and/or our personal training director, [email protected].

What clients have to say about reformer training:

“Since my car accident three years ago I have had chronic neck pain and have difficulty stabilizing my spine. I have managed to reduce muscular spasms, swelling, and constant pain. My family and friends have noticed my progress... which has also improved my mental state. Relief from some pain was my goal and I have received so much more! Pilates has been a true lifesaver.” Becky Berry

“I love Pilates and working on the Reformer has been a great variance to regular training.” Kris Magel
